Gum disease doesn't have to mean cutting, stitches, and weeks of recovery. At Vienna Periodontics & Implant Surgery, Dr. Eugene Oh and Dr. Tony Palumbo offer the LANAP® protocol (Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure) — a minimally invasive, laser-based alternative to traditional gum surgery. Using the PerioLase® MVP-7™, the only laser cleared by the FDA for true periodontal regeneration, we're able to treat infected gum tissue while leaving healthy tissue intact, with less pain, less bleeding, and a faster return to your normal routine.

What Is the LANAP Protocol?

The LANAP protocol is an FDA-cleared, laser-based treatment for moderate to advanced gum disease. Unlike traditional periodontal surgery, there's no cutting or suturing involved. A fiber about the width of three human hairs is guided between the tooth and gum, where it targets and removes the bacteria driving the infection — without disturbing the healthy tissue around it.

Because the procedure is so precise, most patients experience:

  • Less pain and discomfort during and after treatment

  • Minimal bleeding and swelling

  • Little to no gum recession, since the gums aren't cut

  • A same-day or next-day return to work and normal activities

The LANAP protocol is the only laser periodontal treatment scientifically proven to regenerate bone, cementum, and periodontal ligament — the tissues gum disease destroys. That means, in many cases, it can help save teeth that might otherwise be considered hopeless with traditional treatment.

Why We Recommend It

Gum disease affects roughly half of American adults, and it's linked to health issues well beyond the mouth, including heart disease, diabetes, and stroke risk. Many patients put off treatment because they're worried about pain or downtime. The LANAP protocol removes much of that hesitation: it's gentle enough for patients managing health conditions like diabetes, and it doesn't interfere with blood thinners such as Plavix or aspirin.

Patient Benefits at a Glance

Faster Healing – Minimally invasive approach lets your body recover more quickly.
Less Discomfort – Most patients report less pain than with traditional gum surgery
Minimal Recovery Time – Many return to work or normal activities the same day
Gum preservation – No cutting means less risk of recession and a more natural smile line
Reduced inflammation – Targets bacteria without harming healthy tissue
Tooth-saving potential – Can help retain teeth previously deemed unsalvageable
Broad safety profile – Appropriate for many patients with diabetes, hemophilia, or on blood thinners

What to Expect

Before treatment, we perform a full periodontal evaluation, including charting and X-rays, to understand the extent of the disease. The LANAP protocol is typically completed in two appointments, treating one half of the mouth at each visit. Afterward, most patients see noticeably less bleeding when brushing and fresher breath as healing progresses — though, as with any procedure, your gums will need time to fully recover.
